The Sweet History of the S’more

The gooey campfire treat we now call a s’more actually has a pretty recent — and very American 🇺🇸 — origin story!

📖 The earliest known written recipe showed up in a 1927 Girl Scouts book called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Back then, the recipe was called “Some Mores.” 😋 Most people believe that’s where the name came from… because after eating one, you immediately want some more! 🍪✨

But the ingredients themselves were already becoming super popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s:

🍬 Marshmallows became mass-produced in America thanks to brands like Jet-Puffed.🍘

Graham crackers were invented way back in the 1800s by Sylvester Graham as part of a health food movement (which is honestly hilarious considering what s’mores became 😂).🍫

Chocolate bars from companies like Hershey’s were also becoming cheap, easy to buy, and perfect for melting over a fire.

🏕️ S’mores really took off with the rise of camping culture and outdoor adventures in the early 20th century. Organizations like the Girl Scouts of the USA and the Boy Scouts of America helped make them a campfire classic because they were:

  • easy to make 🔥

  • fun to share 👯

  • and absolutely delicious 🤤

By the 1950s and 1960s, “Some Mores” had officially been shortened to “S’mores,” and the treat became a nostalgic symbol of:🌲 summer camps🔥 backyard fire pits⭐ late-night campfires🎶 and sticky fingers everywhere

So even though s’mores feel timeless, they’re actually a 20th-century invention — created from convenience foods, outdoor fun, and one very clever name that stuck forever. 🍫🔥🍪
