What Is Dubai Chocolate?
Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz online about “Dubai Chocolate” — but what exactly is it, and where did it come from?
The Origins of Dubai Chocolate
There are a few stories floating around about who first created this now-famous treat.
One of the most widely credited founders is Sarah Hamouda, the British-Egyptian chocolatier behind Fix Dessert Chocolatier, which she launched in 2021. Inspired by her pregnancy cravings, Sarah began experimenting with chocolate bars filled with unique, indulgent ingredients. Based in Dubai since around 2015, she brought a blend of global and Middle Eastern influences to her creations.
Others credit her partner, Chef Nouel Catis Omamalin, a skilled pastry chef, as the mastermind behind the Dubai-style chocolate bar.
The treat gained traction in part due to rising costs in cocoa and pistachio production. By reimagining chocolate with creative fillings and a more affordable structure, makers found a way to deliver luxury at a lower cost. The association with Dubai — seen as glamorous, trendy, and influencer-friendly — only added to its mystique.
In 2024, the chocolate went viral in South Korea with the launch of a bar called “Can’t Get Knafeh of It”. Its vivid colors and creamy, crunchy texture made it both delicious and camera-ready — a recipe for viral success. The intrigue and mystery around the product only increased its popularity.
What’s in “Dubai Chocolate”?
Traditionally, Dubai Chocolate is made with smooth milk chocolate and filled with a rich pistachio cream, crispy kadayif (shredded phyllo pastry), and sometimes tahini. The pistachio component can range from a fine paste to coarsely ground nuts, depending on the maker.
What Makes Dubai Chocolate So Special?
Here’s what sets it apart:
Unique Flavor FusionDubai chocolate blends Belgian-style milk chocolate with flavors drawn from Middle Eastern desserts — especially knafeh, known for its nutty, cheesy, and syrupy richness. I personally love the dark chocolate versions.
Distinctive TextureExpect a multi-layered bite: creamy pistachio, crunchy kadayif, and nutty tahini come together in a satisfying, luxurious texture.
Premium CraftsmanshipMany of these bars are handmade using single-origin cacao and high-quality ingredients, with attention to detail in both flavor and presentation.
Visual AppealThe vibrant green pistachio filling and hand-painted exteriors make these bars stand out — especially on social media.
Cultural InspirationDrawing from beloved Middle Eastern sweets, Dubai chocolate offers a modern twist on nostalgic flavors.
Beyond the Bar
Dubai chocolate has evolved into a trend that spans across desserts: from gelato and donuts to croissants, cookies, tarts, and even cheesecakes. Its versatility and bold flavors have made it a go-to component for pastry chefs and dessert lovers around the world.
